Attention Metrics-Discuss
Advertising is a good way to expose your site or blogs to the world. And curently, they are too
many companies and sites/blogs that had take the benefit. The price will be fluctuate between ranks. And some of the method to value the blogs are using Alexa, Technorati, and PageRank.
Let discuss about what metrics could be benefit for both advertisers and publishers. At first, I like to make a more in depth solution on ”
“How Long The Times Your Visitors At Your Site” or “Attention metrics“.
How Long The Time Your Visitors At Your Pages
Attention: calculates the total time spent on a site, calculated as a percentage of the total time people spend online (U.S. users only). This gets around the overstating of a site’s importance as a result of transient traffic spikes and unique visitors/page-views, as well as understating of a site’s importance as a result of low page-views due to use of technologies such as Flash, AJAX, and so on, simply by using time as a metric instead of absolute number of hits.
Velocity: is simply a measure of the change in daily Attention and can be used to asses the growth of a site relative to others.
Perhaps we should use time spent by average visitor and total time spent reading a post as a metric to measure site rank, exposure, and popularity rather than just the number of hits you get.
With new web technologies that continue to make page views irrelevant, ranking based on attention (i.e. time spent on a site) does hold a lot of merit, but this metrics doesn’t necessarily apply to all kinds of sites.
While this new metric will definitely help some sites, like YouTube, Flickr,Shopping sites, and others more similar, it will have to force other sites to change their business models if they want to adapt and it will be sure no way.
Webmasters already track their bounce rate (which is a more important metric) to see if people are coming to look or just leaving.
As we take a look at this picture that I take from Compete(that use this metrics) for example:
It’s seems Myspace was the most who take the benefit from the attention metrics. And even Google is rank 5 for it. But I think Google doesn’t really care about that as they were sell at clicks, not views and as they were the most relevancy and most accurate in search, this metrics doesn’t make any sense at all.
A big problem with measuring the time users spend on page is tabbed browsing. In theory, when I opened up many sites using a tab browsing, all clocking up viewing time when the fact is simply that I haven’t got around to closing them yet.
My conclusion is, I’m not telling that there is no value at all with this metrics, but surely it will be another factor to use that an be develop more and for somehow, it couldn’t be another way,but it can be compile with the other metrics to give more accurate answer in helping marketing people to find high potential advertisng sites.
