Is Google a Monopoly-Understanding Google
This topic cause a heat today at DigitalPoint forum and there were many honest feedback and actually quite logical answer from the webmasters there.
Let me state my opinion here:
1) What Is Monopoly Means
A monopoly words is taken from the Greek languange describe monos= one + polien= to sell and is defined as a persistent market situation where there is only one provider of a product or service, in other words a firm that has no competitors in the industry.
Primary characteristics of a monopoly
- Single Seller: For a pure monopoly to take place, only one company can be selling the good or service. A company can have a monopoly on certain goods and services but not on others.
- Significant Barrier of Entry: If a company has a monopoly on a good or service, it becomes prohibitively difficult for other firms to enter the industry and provide the same good or service.
- No close substitutes: Monopoly is not merely the state of having control over a product; it also means that there are no close substitutes available that fill the same function as the monopolized good.
- Price maker: Because a single firm controls the total supply in a pure monopoly, it is able to exert a significant degree of control over the price by changing the quantity supplied.
So, in terms of search engine business, clearly Google isn’t the pure monopoly of the web internet search engine as they were other substitute like Yahoo, Ask, Live Search, and many more to come.Certainly, Yahoo!, MSN and Ask Jeeves, etc. aren’t ready to throw in the towel yet.
Internet search engine are specialize sites on the web that are design to help people to find information on other sites. There are differences in the ways various search engine work, but they are on three basics tasks:
1) They search the internet based on the search query type by the users.
2) They keep an index of the words they find and where they find them.
3) They allow users to look for words or combination of words found in that index.
And in this battle, Google provide more relevance and the most accurate answers for the search query based on it’s proven weighting system. The Google spider was built to index every significant word on a page, leaving out the articles “a,” “an” and “the.” Other spiders take different approaches. These different approaches usually attempt to make the spider operate faster, allow users to search more efficiently, or both. Other systems, such as AltaVista, go in the other direction, indexing every single word on a page, including “a,” “an,” “the” and other “insignificant” words.
The simplicity, trusted web authority weighting system and fast load indexing per query is the true measure of how Google had been a big brand leader of the search engine business nowadays.
And that is the measurement that other search engines must have yet to achieve. By develop more features and more relevancy solution in their search engine algorithm, they were many loopholes to take over the Google spot. Despite being the #1 search engine in the web, Google were not the best for the images search that Livesearch do. And it solely prove that they not only the best solution provider for the all answers.
They are much more to comes an we’ve been waiting for it.
